Why Soy?

Benefits of Soy Candles
Soy wax is made from soy beans grown by our U.S. farms. When you burn one of our soy candles, you are supporting farmers across the country.  Our soy wax is Kosher Certified, proving our committment to providing safe and healthy products.  Soy wax does not stain so you do not have to worry about ruining clothing, furniture or other items. Soy wax is non-toxic and burns at a longer cooler temperature without soot buildup.  Soy wax allows for candles to have a stronger scent and a purer scent throw. This creates great candles with the desired scent for any environment.

Many people are searching for green products to replace more traditional ones that are unfriendly towards the environment. By using soy wax candles you are choosing to support the environment and still enjoy the ambiance you are accustomed to.  Soy is a resource that can be replaced at a rate comparable or faster to the rate of consumption.  Soy is continually producible without damaging the ecosystem.  Every pound of soy wax sold enhances the strength of the US agriculture sector and supports the American farmer.
“Being Green” our soy wax is renewable, biodegradable and natural.

Disadvantages of Soy Candles

Because soy wax is all natural, there are no preservatives. As a result, some white frosting or shrinkage may occur.  White frosting may appear on the candle overtime as well as shrinkage.  The white frosting may appear anywhere on the candle and resembles the appearance of cauliflower.  "Shrinkage" is when the wax has pulled away from the container.  It can appear as wet spots.  Shrinkage occurs in cold temperatures and can occur when below 72 degrees.  When dealing with 100% all natural soy wax this can occur.  Frosting and shrinkage has no affect on the scent or burning of the candle. These are merely cosmetic disadvantages. You will still have a clean slower burning candle that is better for the environment. Here at Dallas Soy Candle, we actually "cure" our candles between 73 to 79 degrees to minimize the shrinkage and frosting potential.  Soy candle needs 7 to 10 days to “cure” properly and when the candle is cured it will have a better scent throw.   Soy candles have a lower melting point than paraffin candles so they will "sweat" at 80 degrees and above. Sweating is normal and will not ruin the candle.  Only when you expose it to extreme heat for a long period of time it will melt and then will not burn properly.

Tips for Burning Soy Candles
These are some tips so you will enjoy your soy candle longer and safer.  Before lighting your soy candle, the wick should be trimmed back about ¼” each time. Otherwise the soy candle will smoke and burn to fast.  There will be like a mushroom on the top of the wick that needs to be cut back before relighting.  A candle has a memory so make sure that the first time that you burn your candle that it pools completely to the edges of the container. Otherwise, you started a "tunnel" candle.  A candle will "tunnel" if it does not pool completely to the edges of the container.  It is recommended that you do not burn the candle more than 4 hours at a time to achieve the most of the candle.  Discontinue use of the burning the candle when there is only ½” of wax left in the bottom. This way there is no potential for a fire hazard.  Keep burning soy candles away from children, pets and flammable materials. Never leave burning candles unattended.  Soy candles should not be left for a long time in direct sunlight to prevent the color from fading. Allow soy candle to cool and harden before relighting.  Do not move the candle while it is burning.  Extinguish the candle if the flame becomes too high or the candle is flickering repeatedly. Let it cool and then trim back the wick ¼” and it will burn better.

 Harmful Affects of Paraffin Wax
Paraffin wax is derived from petroleum and produces harmful vapors into the air when burned.  In order for the fragrance to be released in a paraffin candle, harmful chemicals must be added.  It is these chemicals that can create some major health risks.  Burning paraffin wax produces high-levels of indoor contamination, particularly lead and soot.  The soot can penetrate into the deepest parts of the respiratory tract and lungs which can create breathing concerns.  Burning paraffin has been linked to  acute irriation of the existing respiratory disease like asthma.  It is a nonrenewable resource and paraffin burns hotter and quicker than other waxes creating more concern for a fire hazard.  Also, paraffin wax does not cleanup easily.

Keep in mind when you do purchase candles, make sure that you do not buy one with paraffin wax in it.  This wax can cover an entire wall and result into a bad stain as well as get in your air vents and continue to recirculate these toxic carcinogens.   Paraffin supports the oil industry while soy supports our farmers.  Remember, buy soy candles made up of natural soybean plants and are 100% natural.  Note:  there is a difference between Soy Wax and a Soy Blend Wax.

What is a Soy Blend Wax?
Most soy candle manufacturers use a blend of different waxes which may include beeswax, paraffin or palm wax.  Soy wax, beeswax and palm wax are natural.  Paraffin wax is not.  A soy blend using soy, beeswax, and palm wax is more costly but more eco-friendly.  However, a soy wax can be combined with a paraffin wax.  If this is the case, the candle will be cheaper but not eco-friendly.  Therefore, if you are buying a soy blended candle, make sure to find out what the blend consists of in the wax.   If a candle manufacturer states 100% all natural soy then it is all soy containing no blends and will cost slightly higher than a blend with paraffin wax.

Are your candles triple scented?
Yes, our candles are triple scented.  There is a strong misunderstanding in regards to "triple scented" candles.  The truth is soy wax has a maximum amount of fragrance oil that candle wax can hold.  There are ranges of fragrance that can be added to a candle such as .5 ounce to 1.5 ounce of fragrance per pound of wax.  The norm is to apply 1 ounce per pound of wax which is known as "double scented"  in making candles.  Therefore, if a candle maker claims that their candles are triple scented it means that they added 1.5 ounce per pound of wax.

Where do you ship?
Currently, we only ship in the United States.

How long will my shipment take?
Orders for items that are in stock usually ship out within 24 to 48 hours, excluding weekends. Items not in stock usually ship within 7 to 10 days. If there is a problem with an item back ordered and we will not be able to meet this time frame, you will be contacted via phone or e-mail. At this point, you can either choose to wait for the item, substitute another item, or remove it from your order. If you choose to wait, the back ordered item will ship out to you automatically just as soon as we get it in stock. Due to availability and vendor issues, we can only provide an estimate as to when this will occur.  An e-mail with shipping tracking information will be e-mailed once shipped.

Payments for back ordered items are made up front as part of the original order. This
helps keep shipping costs down, as it would be more expensive to charge for two separate shipments. If you choose to remove the backorder item from your order, a refund will be issued that is consistent with the original method of payment.

Can Soy Candles melt in the heat?
Shipping soy wax in the summer months in Texas can be challenging. Soy wax is a very soft wax and if kept in hot weather for long periods of time, will get soft and sticky. Whether your choose UPS or USPS, we will do every thing we can to minimize the severe exposure. Keep in mind that UPS trucks are not air conditioned and even through insured, they will not reimburse for melted candles. Dallas Soy Candles will utilize insulated packaging as well as a cold pack when temperatures outside are above 80 degrees but we can cannot be held liable for melted candles. My recommendation is that once your candles arrive to remove the boxes from the heat immediately and let them cool to room temperature (like 8 to 10 hrs). Once the candles have cooled they should return to a normal wax form. It may be slightly blemished from some melting. Soy wax can be cleaned with hot soapy water and rub off with a cloth.
